ILLUSION - Washi Lighting by Shibazaki Koji

The "Nightface" series by Shibazaki Koji (b. 1964) consists of lightings created by layering sheets of Japanese washi paper; the interplay of light and shadow filtering through these layers create mysterious, three-dimensional effects. When placed in a well-lit area, the work appears to be a simple white box wrapped in washi; however, when illuminated, a complex, trompe-l'œil-like sense of depth emerges—an optical illusion that becomes even more realistic and compelling in dimmer surroundings.

About 40 years ago, Shibazaki created lightings during his student days; after roughly a decade, the paper on its surface began to fall apart. While the inferior-quality paper deteriorated, the Mino Washi paper remained perfectly intact. This experience sparked his interest in washi capable of enduring through the ages. He established a washi workshop in 2007 and has since used paper handmade by himself in his works.

In this exhibition, lightings created by Shibazaki illuminate the museum’s Art Nouveau interiors, casting light upon furniture created by French artisans over a century ago. Also on display are decorative works—such as tapestries—created in recent years, alongside new lightings inspired by designs of Émile Gallé. We invite you to fully immerse yourself in the world of "ILLUSION" created by interior artist Shibazaki Koji—a creator who deeply understands Japanese washi paper and tirelessly pursues its authentic appeal—and to savor the beauty and texture born of craftsmanship that transcends both borders and eras.
